First Annual Mildred Long Enloe Scholarship
1932-2016

Ms. Mildred Long Enloe was raised in Buncombe County, NC.  She was a 1950 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School in Asheville, NC.  She furthered her education by receiving a BS degree in Music and a minor in English from Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD in 1954. While at Morgan State, she joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. among other activities.  Upon graduation from Morgan State, Mildred worked a short time in Murphy, NC at Texana Elementary/Junior High School before accepting a position in Shelby as an English teacher at Washington High School. She later became a music teacher and worked at a number of schools throughout Cleveland County.  Her teaching career spanned over 40 years working with thousands of children throughout the county.  After her retirement, there was never a week that went by that she or her family would not be approached by a former student telling how she impacted their life.  Known for her firm teaching style, she cared deeply about every child she was committed to instructing.  Upon retiring from the school system, Mildred worked for many years lending a helping hand at Enloe Mortuary and helping her son, Kevin.  She was dedicated and devoted to helping him in any capacity that was needed and enjoyed working with the families that were served.

With the passing of Mildred Long Enloe, last year, we wanted to honor her and keep her legacy and memory alive by establishing the first annual Mildred Long Enloe Scholarship.  With her commitment to serving the community, we will grant a 3000.00 scholarship to a deserving minority local high school graduate this year who is committed to going into a service oriented field.
